Poetry Built to Last
THE LAWRENCE HART INSTITUTE seeks out and supports the poetry that matters, that stirs the imagination no matter how often it is read. Under the leadership of John Hart, son of the influential teacher-critic whose name it bears, the Institute offers classes and mentorships for ambitious writers, publishes a prestigious, paying magazine, and facilitates access to a rich literary archive.

“When you begin to write a poem—to turn a living, actual experience, something that moves you deeply, into words on paper—you’re doing something by nature impossible. From that stubborn, intractable beast, the English language, you need all the help you can get.”
JEANNE McGAHEY, Homecoming with Reflections, Quarterly Review of Literature Poetry Series
“You tricked us into quality. Tried to get our poems out of hiding.”
—MIKE MESERVE, “For Lawrence Hart”

[Instead of having a button on the home page leading to a pop-up box with info about the Poetry Intensive (as on the current live site), I’ve put Intensive info into a sidebar on the home page, with a link at the bottom that connects to The Hart Seminar page. Is the Intensive the same as the Seminar? If so, we can put the sign-up form on the Seminar page so that it doesn’t clutter the sidebar. I suggest also putting a prominent link in the main area of the home page to the Seminar page whenever there is an approaching class offering.]
